Choosing the Right Lubricant Oil for Your Fleet
A practical guide to viscosity grades, engine protection, and getting maximum mileage from every drop.
For a fleet operator, lubricant oil is one of the smallest line items on the budget — and one of the largest influences on maintenance cost. The right oil extends engine life, improves fuel economy, and stretches drain intervals. The wrong one quietly does the opposite. Here's how to choose well.
Start with viscosity
The grade on the label — 15W-40, 10W-30, 5W-30 — describes how the oil flows when cold (the W number) and at operating temperature. Follow the engine manufacturer's recommendation for your climate and duty cycle. In most of India, multigrade oils like 15W-40 remain the workhorse choice for commercial diesel engines.
Match the specification, not just the grade
Two oils with the same viscosity can perform very differently. Check the API service category (such as CI-4 or CK-4 for diesel) and any OEM approvals. Newer categories carry better protection against oxidation, soot, and wear — especially important for engines running long highway hauls or high idle times.
Mineral, semi-synthetic, or synthetic?
- Mineral: Economical and reliable for standard duty cycles with regular drain intervals.
- Semi-synthetic: Better oxidation resistance and cold-start protection at moderate cost.
- Full synthetic: Longest drain intervals and best protection for severe duty, extreme temperatures, or premium engines.
Fleet habits that pay
Standardise on as few oils as possible to avoid mix-ups, sample and analyse used oil periodically, and buy from a manufacturer whose batches are laboratory-certified. Kissan Energy's lubricant range is produced under ISO quality systems and backed by technical support — so every drop works as hard as your fleet does.
